Today’s sermon summary “Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation.” This is a verse that sums up the message of the entire book of Galatians. The legalistic teachers made their case by using circumcision, the foundation of Judaism, as a point of contention. However, Paul rejected their claims, saying that “neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything.” Paul said that what is more important is the “new creation.” As we learned last week, if we make it a habit to live in dependence on the Spirit, He will produce spiritual fruit in our character. In this way, we are transformed into Christlikeness, which is the new creation. Paul pointed out that the characteristics of legalists are that they seek praise from others and fear persecution from the Jews, and further that they teach the law to others but do not practice it themselves. In other words, legalism may improve a person’s outward persona, but it does not change his or her inner life. God does not want us to be zealous in religious acts, but to grow in character and produce the fruit of the Spirit. As we grow spiritually, we will be used more by the Lord. Let us continue to walk by the Spirit
「割礼を受けているか受けていないかは、大事なことではありません。大事なのは新しい創造です。」これはガラテヤ書全体のメッセージを要約した聖句であると言える。律法主義的教師達は、ユダヤ教の土台である割礼を論点として、彼らの主張を語った。しかしながら、パウロは割礼の有無は重要な事ではないと彼らの主張を真っ向から否定した。パウロは、それよりも私達が新しく創造される事が重要であると述べた。先週学んだように、私達が御霊に依り頼んで生きる事を習慣化するならば、御霊が私達の人格に実を結ばれる。こうにして、私達がキリストに似た者へと変えられる事こそが新しい創造なのだ。パウロは、律法主義者の特徴として、彼らが他者からの賞賛を求め、またユダヤ人達からの迫害を恐れている事。更に彼らは人には律法を教えるが、自分達がそれを実行していない事を指摘した。つまり、律法主義は人の外面は良くしても、その内面は変えないのだ。神が私達に望んでおられる事は、宗教行為に熱心になる事ではなく、私達の品性が練られ、御霊の実を結ぶ事である。私達が霊的に成長する事で、私達はより主に用いられる器となれる。御霊によって歩み続けよう。
