Paul wrote to the churches in Galatia that he had planted. The reason was that after Paul left Galatia, legalistic Jewish Christian teachers came there and taught them false doctrines. The false teachers denied Paul’s apostleship and taught that Gentiles must be circumcised and become Jews in order to be saved. We are saved by God’s grace “alone. ”The false teachers did not understand the greatness of God’s grace and the gospel. We will reflect on the characteristics of Paul, who truly understood God’s grace. 1: Paul understood his calling from God. He was called to be an apostle to the Gentiles. It was not an authority given by man, but by God. In contrast, the false teachers had no authority from God or from man. Knowing our God-given calling will be the foundation for our Christian life. 2: Paul was a diligent student of the Bible. Paul, who was well versed in the Old Testament, completed his systematic theology after encountering the resurrected Jesus. He understood that the Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament was Jesus. His depth of biblical understanding confirmed his faith in Jesus. 3: Paul had a spiritual experience. His encounter with the resurrected Jesus led to his dramatic conversion from Jew to Christian. We grow in faith by learning biblical knowledge and by having spiritual experiences. It is important for us to live in a balance of both knowledge and experience. It is God’s grace, not the law, that makes us grow spiritually. Let us live filled with the Holy Spirit.
パウロは自らが開拓したガラテヤの諸教会に手紙を書いた。何故ならばパウロがガラテヤを去った後、そこに律法主義的ユダヤ人クリスチャン達が来て、彼らに間違った教理を教えたからだ。偽教師達は、パウロの使徒職を否定し、更に、異邦人は割礼を受けてユダヤ人にならないと救われないと教えたのだ。私達は神の恵みのみによって救われる。偽教師達は、神の恵みと福音の偉大さを理解していなかったのだ。神の恵みを真に理解していたパウロの特徴について考える。１：パウロは自らの召しを理解していた。彼は異邦人の使徒として召されていた。それは人から与えられた権威ではなく、神ご自身から与えられた権威であった。それに対し、偽教師達は神からの権威も人からの権威も持っていなかった。神から与えられた使命を知る事は、私達がクリスチャンとして生きる上での土台となる。２：パウロは勉強熱心であった。彼は聖書の学びに関して熱心であった。旧約聖書の知識に精通していたパウロは復活のイエスに出会った事で、彼の中での組織神学が完成した。旧約聖書が預言していたメシアがイエスである事を理解したのだ。聖書理解の深さが、彼のイエスへの信仰を確かなものとした。３：パウロは霊的体験をした。彼は復活のイエスと出会う事で、ユダヤ教徒からキリスト教徒へと劇的な改心をした。私達は聖書の知識を学ぶ事と同時に、霊的な体験をする事で、信仰的 に成長する。学びと体験、双方のバランスの中に生きる事が重要なのだ。私達を霊的に成長させるのは、律法ではなく神の恵みである。聖霊に満たされて生きよう。
